The growing popularity of organic, grass-fed, and locally grown foods reflects a growing consumer rebellion against an industrial, global food system. Declining supplies of fossil energy, rising concern for global climate change, and growing social and economic inequities will exert even greater pressures on industrial agriculture in the decades ahead.
These are all ultimately issues of national and global food security. Eventually, society must confront the problematic reality: Confinement animal feeding operations CAFOs will be among the first casualties of this confrontation because CAFOs epitomize the inherent lack of sustainability of a profit-driven, fossil-energy-dependent, industrial agriculture. Grass farming, on the other hand, epitomizes the potential for a quality-driven, solar-energy-dependent, sustainable agriculture.
Animal agriculture will be needed to help feed the world in the post-industrial twenty-first century, and most animals in the future will be raised on grass. Industrialization is quite commonly associated with manufacturing, but the transition from agrarian to manufacturing economies is only a consequence, rather than the essence, of industrialization.
The fundamental purpose of industrialization is to enhance productivity and economic efficiency by making it possible to produce a greater value of output from a given amount of input. The basic strategies of industrialization are specialization, standardization, and consolidation of control. As agriculture became more specialized and standardized, it could be mechanized and routinized, thus allowing—at times forcing—individual farmers to consolidate more land, labor, and capital under their control.
The factories and offices in urban areas were only the most obvious symbols of the industrial economy, as they employed the strategies of industrialization in their pursuit of ever greater productive and economic efficiency. The American food system as a whole has followed the same basic path of specialization, standardization, and consolidation and today is in the final stages of global consolidation of corporate control.
While industrialization has brought tremendous economic benefits by reducing cost and increasing the availability of food, it has done so by imposing significant costs on nature and society through environmental degradation and growing social inequity.

Evidence of industrial, agricultural and domestic archaeology, dating from up to 4, years ago has been found at the site of the Dyce Park and Choose and Dyce Drive link road site.
The finds include 4, year-old pottery from the early Bronze Age, the remains of timber roundhouses, and evidence of Iron Age smithing and domestic life. The site has real regional significance and adds considerably to a wider understanding of early habitation in the area. The team has discovered evidence of industrial, agricultural and domestic activity dating from the early Bronze Age BC through to the s.
The work has been carried out on a relatively undisturbed piece of ground in an area where finds from prehistory onwards have been made in the past. For that reason, a condition was attached to the planning permission for the site requiring archaeological work to be carried out prior to development. This dig was carried out because the initial archaeological evaluation revealed a range of archaeological features which required further examination.
Archaeologist Steve Thomson said: Partial quern stones, used for grinding cereal crops, have been found along with metal working residues and puts containing probable fire rakings of meals and every day life. I think the people of Aberdeen and much further afield will be absolutely fascinated by what has been discovered and keen to see some of the finds for themselves. Clearly a sense of place was important, not purely for practical reasons.
Seeing the landscape, even today, helps the team understand why it was a focus for so long for continued use. It is genuinely exciting to be so close and even walk on surfaces our predecessors used thousands of years ago.

Overview. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is a cabinet-level agency that oversees the American farming industry. USDA duties range from helping farmers with price support subsidies, to inspecting food to ensure the safety of the American public.
State and local health departments, the food industry, and consumers also play essential roles in all aspects of food safety. CDC helps make food safer by: Building state and local capacity to improve surveillance and investigation of foodborne illnesses through PulseNet , the Integrated Food Safety Centers of Excellence , and other programs. Working with local, state, and federal partners to investigate outbreaks, and to implement systems to better detect, stop, and prevent them.
Using data to evaluate and revise foodborne disease prevention strategies and policies. Working with other countries and international agencies to improve surveillance, investigation, and prevention of foodborne infections in the United States and around the world. Whole genome sequencing helped confirm that raw flour was the source of an E. CDC scientists and partners in local, state, and federal agencies use whole genome sequencing to show which bacterial strains are most alike genetically.
Strains that are very alike may have the same source. This laboratory method can provide important clues during outbreak investigations to help link specific sources of food to illness and death. Genome sequencing provides scientists with more detailed genetic information about the bacteria that is causing an illness than the traditional DNA fingerprinting method, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis.
This next-generation technology allows scientists to more efficiently find, investigate, and identify sources of foodborne outbreaks.
